My Dad side is Russian and my Mum was Maltese and yes I have a Spanish surname, my mum really set the standard in our household, when I was 19 my Mum tragically died in a home accident, it was a cornerstone moment of my life.
I come from a family of battlers; We wear our heart on sleeves; We are hard workers and have always been told how down to earth we are. My Dad is a side Russian and my Mum was Maltese and I have a Spanish surname! My mum really set the standard in our household for the way in which you treat others, having self-respect and doing the best with whatever you have. This was reflected in her appearance, always holding her head high. Even though we had no money, looking at her you would never know. She always looked beautiful even going to the shops, she would be the glamorous one in the community grocery store.
My parents sacrificed and put everything they desired on hold for us, they were family orientated and that created a very strong bond for my brothers and I. My parents had it tough and I think the pressure of financial circumstances and my father’s issues caused them to separate. They still were living together until tragically one day my beautiful Mum died, I was just 19. It was late one night my Mum woke to fix herself some water and fainted, she hit her head on the kitchen table and died instantly, my poor brother found her. She was only 40. I was 19. Tragically only weeks earlier she had just herself lost her Mother in a terrible car accident – both my grandmother and cousin (Mary and Sharmain) were killed whilst waiting for the traffic lights to change.
One cornerstone moment of my life was at my mother’s funeral when my other grandmother told me I was the woman of the house now and I had all the kids to look after. This was a tough time and news that I really struggled with as my mum had always wanted me to be the best I can be- not drop out of school to look after my family. I did grow up very quickly and really missed the role model of my mother. However I was Inspired by the wishes of my mum, I worked very hard at school and grabbed hold of every opportunity put my way. I also love my family and didn’t want to waste my time on the negatives.
